My Teaching

I have been teaching throughout my career and I am proud to continue the violin traditions and methods passed to me by my own teachers, Erich Gruenberg and Joseph Suk. I enjoy teaching all ages and players at every stage of their violin playing; from young (or old!) beginners through to those preparing for entrance exams for school, college and conservatoire. I am happy to work with students towards their graded exams and I also coach professionals for orchestral auditions and specific performances or projects. I’m also available for consultation lessons or to work with you on a specific technical issue or area of repertoire. Over the years, I’ve taught, coached and examined both chamber music and on the orchestral programmes of the Royal College of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. I’ve also been privileged to be involved in many educational projects with the London Philharmonic Orchestra including the LPO Creative Classrooms programme which introduced instruments and the orchestra to school children and equipped their teachers with skills to continue with their musical education. I also enjoyed mentoring talented young musicians on the hugely successful LPO Junior Artists programme; helping them with mock auditions, ensemble coaching and orchestral rehearsals.

I live and teach in South London; please do get in touch if you would like to arrange lessons or to ask about any aspect of my teaching practise.

Biography

Tina Gruenberg has a distinguished and wide-ranging career as soloist, chamber musician, orchestral leader and teacher. She was born in London and began playing the violin at the age of four, studying with her father, the celebrated violinist Erich Gruenberg.

She made her solo debut aged nine, in a Mozart Concerto at the Aldeburgh Festival. At sixteen she won a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music with Emanuel Hurwitz, followed by a Martin Musical Trust award to study in Vienna with Josef Suk at the University of Music and Performing Arts.

Tina has appeared as soloist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and London Mozart Players. She has performed the Brahms Double Concerto with Steven Isserlis and the Ulster Orchestra. Concertos performed at the Royal Festival Hall include those by Tchaikovksy and Mozart, Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole and the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante.

She was Sub-leader of The London Philharmonic Orchestra for ten years, during which she led numerous concerts, recordings and international tours for such distinguished conductors as Bernard Haitink, Zubin Mehta, Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Roger Norrington, Sir Andrew Davis, Gennady Rozhdestvensky and Franz Welser-Möst, with whom she recorded the solo violin part in Strauss’ “Morgen” for the EMI.

Tina was a member of the International prize-winning piano trio, “Trio Zingara” with whom she gave recitals and broadcasts worldwide. Her live television recital for Channel 4 was shown throughout Europe. She has had a highly successful collaboration with the celebrated countertenor, James Bowman, with whom she has recorded song cycles and chamber music. She was also invited to play Bach’s Chaconne for the critically acclaimed production of “A Question Of Geography” at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford and at The Barbican, London. She has also recorded the scores for many blockbuster films including some of the most successful ever composed; the Lord Of The Rings trilogy.

In 1991, Tina was made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in recognition of her services to music. She plays on a fine J. B. Rogeri violin made in 1696 at the workshop of Nicola Amati in Cremona.
